This week’s topic should be from the non-movie canon content category, so I’ll bite the bullet and make it The Book of Boba Fett. I’d say make it non-spoilery, since the first episode came out on 29th, but it is a first episode, so…??? (Wookieepedia article here.)

I haven't seen the first ep yet, but I think I want to! When the show was first hinted at in the credit scene of The Mandalorian, I was like "ughhhhh who cares", but my SW fandom focus has shifted since then, so now it's Relevant To My Interests XD.

Also, fuck, it's possible the worldbuilding in the longfic I wrote last year and never posted will get Jossed. I don't mind that much, canon is but a clay I build my ugly lawn ornaments out of, but it would peeve me.

And in "elsewhere on DW", there was a discussion about Reylo shipping over at fictional_fans. In all honesty I did not read it, but I did skim it right now and it looks reasonably civil.

Yeah it was interesting seeing different perspectives, even if I don’t agree with them. Some of the comments are from non SW fans tho.

I almost want to join that Reylo discussion, but tumblr's scared me away from sharing my love for it.

I think that discussion would be a fairly safe place, since it's explicitly meant as a no-judgement zone. Although it did seem to me that actual Reylo fans were in the minority.

I also want to say, if you'd like to discuss that on this comm, you can. I admit, Reylo is a really big nOTP for me, but this comm is meant for everyone, whatever their shipping allegiances.

Re: the Reylo discussion. The sequels really put me off, to the point where I resisted watching the last one until a few weeks ago (out of morbid curiosity more than anything). Anyway, I missed all the drama, and yikes, I could see how it would put someone off the fandom.

Re: your fic. Canon is just a suggestion (hey, even the EU was de-canonfied) ;) Post it!!

I need to finish watching s2 of the Mandalorian before I can start watching BOBF, but I think I might be willing to do that now. Maybe.

"not willing" -- ouch, feeling like a TV show is a chore sucks. Do you have some specific hangups, or is it just a lack of interest?

Lack of interest, but specifically because it seems like Disney's using it to cram in as many cameos as possible. Like they got their fingers burned on the hot stove of overconfidence, and now they're playing it overcautious. "Hey, watch this show where the stakes are extremely low and there's lots of fandom nods!" Which is a disservice to the genuinely good worldbuilding going on, but y'know.

Also I'm burnt out on keeping up with Disney's neverending content mill.

I watched Book of Boba Fett. It has a good start of a series, filling in the gap between Return of the Jedi and The Mandalorian.

Hmmm, good to know. I thought it was set after S2 of The Mandalorian. Are there flashbacks? (I know I know I could google it but I don't want to accidentally read a scene-by-scene recap - I don't mind some spoilers, but that would be too much.)

Yes, to both things. It takes place after Mando season 2 but it does have flashbacks. I think that some reviewers were too quick to judge the show right away, when it’s just starting. Tho I hope it builds up further.

I just saw the first episode yesterday and would agree. I think given the setup of this series the central issue is to address what's been happening with his story since RotJ so I was pretty satisfied with how they got on with it.

Agreed. I’m just not sure why some reviewers are giving it some harsh reviews when it’s just one episode so far. Looking forward to the next one tomorrow.

I agree. It wasn't as great a start as Mando, but it's also not the same show.

And now I'm just remembering that for a long time I thought The Mandalorian was about Boba Fett -- and I was totally uninterested lol

I'm curious to see where it will go -- continue the flashbacks/filling in between RotJ and Mando, or moving forward into action that may or may not connect with season 3 of Mando?

It’s fun to speculate! I think it’s gonna be both things, alternating between the past and present, and the finale could have a stinger that leads to Mando season 3.

I turned my brain into much for We Die Like Fen, an irregularly scheduled secret santa/writing challenge whose rules change every time. This time, the concept was that it's a "double blind" exchange, so the fics/arts/etc are gifted to anyone who wants them. 22 Star Wars fics, all of which you can get gifted to YOU! if you just write a nice comment that includes "I would love if this were gifted to me!" or something to that effect.

Still making my way through Balance Point in the NJO.

WDLF is an outgrowth of the fic exchange community – think yuletide, except instead of rare fandoms, each exchange has a different focus, from producing unconventional fanworks to rare femslash ships to space fandoms – that started when an exchange participant decided she wanted to push the boundaries of what exchanges were or could do. The first one simply ran on an extremely accelerated timefram (like, a weekend to write the fics, rather than 4-8 weeks), and subsequent rounds have pushed at what an exchange looks like. This round was a double blind exchange, where the requests were anonymized. As a result, this round, people have to go "claim" their gifts – or any gift they think might be for them – by asking for it to be gifted to them. Next round will be something completely different. The other exchanges are not like this at all.

I watched episode 2. All I can say is that it was better than the previous episode.

Oh no, you didn't like it much? I really enjoyed it! It dragged a bit, and I was disappointed there was so little Fennec, but I finally became invested in the flashback storyline. I just wish the flashbacks weren't at the expense of the "present day" storyline.

Lol I look back on my comment, it does have a understated, blasé tone to it. Actually, I thought the first episode was good, and the second one was better because there was more going on! I’m looking forward to the next episode to see where it goes. I’m hoping the momentum keeps up!
