Hi,

welcome to the weekly chat corner. Have anything SW-related to talk about? Come and tell us.

~ ~ ~

Do you ever interact with Star Wars fans who aren't shipping-fandom fans? What has it been like?

I have a coworker who's a SW fan, and it's weird. He knows a lot of the lore, especially the older EU stuff, so I've had some really good talks with him, but the amount of times I did a tire-screech stop in the middle of saying something because oh SHIT, nope, that's shipping fandom, I will not openly admit to the guy I've read erotica about his favorite character...! XD

The first (and only) time I've been to Galaxy's Edge was with a non-fanfic-fandom fan. I have had multiple conversations with her about Star Wars, but she is neither as knowledgeable about the lore as I am nor-- I think-- much aware of fanfic fandom. And I have not dared to ask. So GE was a ton of fun but not quite the same experience had I been with someone in our area of fandom.

I have friends with whom I talk about Star Wars a lot, and they aren't in online fandom spaces at all.

I'm actually sort of one of those fans when it comes to Star Wars. I mean, I'm here on DW and in fandom spaces and see a lot of what I assume you mean by "shipping-fandom" - but I just don't care too much about who could be having sex with someone else and can't tell you the last time I read anything explicit (at least on purpose).

I think Star Wars is so mainstream that most fans aren't "shipping-fans".
I also know that some corners of online Star Wars fandom are horrid and gatekeeping and judgmental, so I also don't venture into those spaces either.

Sorry for the tangent.
To bring it back to your original question, I probably talk to non-shipping sort of fans than not so I find it quite normal.

Non-shipping (non-fanfic) fandom is where I started, and many of my friends still are. Like [personal profile] colls said, it's such a big fandom, and outside the early scandals of Luke/Leia or Leia/Han with canon destroying the former, it was never known for one of its relationships the way my non-fanfic Trek friends are aware of K/S.
