i've been thinking about the visual language of the fabrics chosen for costuming in the star wars universe. pretty much everything biases toward canvas, gauze, leather or brocade, so when i look at reference photos and they're all 80s lycra it's very jarring. do others have thoughts on this?

Not about that specifically but it is interesting how the costuming runs to extremes, from very basic outfits to incredibly elaborate (Padme). It's interesting to consider Mon Mothma's clothing which has an elegant simplicity that's somehow more in the middle?

no totally! i think comparisons within padmé's outfits especially is worth thinking about, because the white catsuit she wears on geonosis is just such a departure from the rest of her wardrobe in pretty much all other appearances

i think mon mothma is a great example of how minimalism is definitely not synonymous with asceticism
