Random question that struck me this week, with spoilers for the New York Times crossword: Thursday’s puzzle used “Ani” as the answer to “‘Star Wars’ boy, informally”, which prompted me to wonder – how exactly do you spell Anakin’s nickname? The PT novelisations (and IIRC the scripts) use “Annie,” but the Disney+ subtitles use “Ani”. Does this mean he’s Annie in Legends and Ani in canon?

I’ve usually seen Ani as the nickname spelling during the prequels.

Tangent, but I was always surprised that they didn't use some form of "Nick" as Anakin's, well, nickname. (Not only because of the gendered-name thing, at least to many Anglophone audiences, but also because "Nick" is also sometimes used as a slang term for the devil.)

Interestingly, Anakin Skywalker's grandson (in Legends) Anakin Solo does get called "Nik" -- I know I've seen it in fanfics, but I think it may also be a canon nickname as well? This was probably because Ani/Annie was already "taken" but I always preferred it to any of the alternatives.

Apparently it was originally Annie, but rejecting that spelling is like the one thing that unites Star Wars fandom, so I can see Disney deciding to take the easy win and canonize Ani. It's possible that later Legends writers used Ani as well, though I haven't gone looking. All of fandom will use Ani.

Sometimes I see pro jedi discourse and I’m like wow either some fans have not watched Attack of the Clones or willfully misinterpreted the movie and promotional posters just to be contrarian.
