Chat corner 111: Thrawn Ascendancy

Welcome to the Monday chat corner!

The topic for this week is the “Thrawn Ascendancy trilogy”, consisting of three books: Chaos Rising, Greater Good, and Lesser Evil, all written by Timothy Zahn. The protagonist is the fan-favorite Mitth’raw’nuruodo aka Thrawn, one of the few lucky characters who got imported into the new canon from the EU.

Have you read the series? Is it on your TBR list? Or is it a “hard pass”?

I always found Thrawn to be one the least interesting aspects of the original Zahn trilogy, but one thing I appreciated was his mysterious backstory, which was only hinted at briefly in passing. Thus, a series that's primarily focused on Thrawn and fleshing out his backstory is not really my cup of tea. But I'm happy for all of the fans of the character who are getting all this new material about their fave!

It’s a hard pass for me, I stick to Zahn’s classic EU stories.

We read this trilogy over at swbookclub and not being a huge Thrawn fan, I probably wouldn't have picked them up otherwise.
I'm glad I did because they were intriguing and entertaining. I honestly feel like you could take the 'Star Wars' label off and it'd be a good solid space opera trilogy.

Yep. I read the nu!Thrawn trilogy (not the one under discussion) and at one point he used realistic physics to defeat his opponents and I was all "Le gasp! Physics? In my Star Wars? Is that even allowed?"

I'm reminded of that t-shirt "Science is like magic but real" and think it fits.

I am SO GLAD that I am NOT ALONE in my lack of love for Thrawn. He always made my skin crawl. So, yeah, hard pass.
