Welcome to the Monday chat corner!
The topic this week is the book Master & Apprentice by Claudia Gray, which updates the canon backstory of Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Have you read it? What did you think?

Date: 2022-11-21 09:41 pm (UTC)Whilst I'm glad we got to skip teenage Obi-Wan having to suffer slavery in a sea mine etc it was still awkward to see him and Qui-Gon not be close this far into their partnership.
(I get that there's still time for it before TPM happens but it was a bit jarring)
I'm told the prequel to this book "Padawan" (which I haven't read) unfortunately fails to provide any reason for Qui-Gon's reluctance to take on Obi-Wan for training and thus their awkward situation which as a Qui-Gon fan I find annoying. He gets enough bashing from the fandom for his behaviour towards Obi-Wan but to not even address why he's that way is just weird.
Overall the plot is decent with a few twists and a good ending. I also appreciated that it had flashbacks to Qui-Gon's days with Dooku and the revelation that Dooku was messing around with the Dark Side way earlier than I expected. There's also an attempt to discuss the Republic's lax stance on slavery which for myself has always been a big peeve so that was also good to see.
