Chat corner 40: Reminiscing

Ladyfriends and gentlebeings, this is the 40th chat corner of Dreamwars! Whow. That’s a lot of chat corners.
40 isn’t quite a traditional number for teary-eyed reminiscing, but it is a really big number and I have a few general things to say, so here we go! This week’s “optional topic” is going to be this comm itself.
The first topic I ever did here was “What would you like from a DW Star Wars chat community?” Does anyone remember that one? Did we manage to bring some of those things to this comm, or is there still something missing? Or if you’re new, what are your wishes?
Now, a couple of “mod notes”:
- You probably already know this, but just in case: if you want to keep track of the chat, you can track this post (the “TRACK THIS” link in our current theme), and then you will get notifications (=emails, unless you’ve changed your account settings) for every new comment, not just the replies to your own.
- If the weekly theme isn’t interesting but you’d still like to talk about something, don’t be shy to choose your own topic. Maybe you’ve seen a funny SW meme, an interesting article, a horrible cracky idea you’d like to inflict on the audience… or perhaps you’d like to return to something we’ve discussed before? There’s now 40 topics to choose from!
- To that note, I went back and tagged all chat corner posts, so you can now browse the tags and see what we’ve talked about already.
- All that said (and again, probably telling you what you already know), if you just aren’t in the mood to talk SW that week, don’t feel like you have to. DW is tiny and I know I sometimes feel the pressure to keep the activity up so this-or-that corner of it doesn’t die, but if the last 40 weeks proved something to me, we can make a fandom space feel alive even with three people and a shoelace ;)

Her model still has both hands and she can equip a weapon in both slots. I’m several hours in now so I think it’s permanent but I don’t want to mess around with her equipment too much in case it changes.

As for my own wild crossovers, one of the stories in my WIP folder is a fusion of Prequel-era SW with The Sound of Music. XD

Date: 2022-01-26 02:42 am (UTC)I haven’t seen a pink lightsaber in canon, as far as I know. I imagine the color meaning would be similar to a purple lightsaber, a balance between light and dark, but moreso towards the light side of the Force.

Date: 2022-01-24 06:32 pm (UTC)Also, just watched the LEGO SW Halloween special "Terrifying Tales" which was a lot of fun. I have watched all the SW Lego shows and specials (as far as I know), which made this particularly enjoyable since I was familiar with certain characters and running jokes.
Although these are certainly kid friendly, they are rife with insider references only fans would get. And in this special, which had some brief stories within the overall story, this was even more true, because they were playing off of other pop culture horror stories. As soon as the biker took off his helmet I shouted at my partner "They're doing a Lost Boys remix!"
So would definitely recommend.

Fan fic corner?
Date: 2022-01-25 12:05 am (UTC)Here's mine: I recently wrote for a much more popular ship (DinLuke) than my usual (Han/Luke), and wow, there is just so much more traffic! It's a little overwhelming. I think I prefer the rarepair, tbh. Which is good since I'm drafting a Mon Mothma/Leia fic :D

Huh, I didn't know DinLuke was such a big ship! I knew people shipped it, but I didn't pay much attention to it. Why was it overwhelming, too many comments?
One day I'd like to write a big ship, just to see how much more comments & kudos I'd get. I compulsively write gen and rarepairs and I'm generally okay with writing for myself, but I admit, it does feel good when the numbers go up. XD
That said, SW fandom is really nice in that regard. People kudos and leave comments, much more than they used to when I was writing MCU.

Date: 2022-01-26 01:57 am (UTC)Yes, writing for yourself is where it's at! I can see how someone would chase the bigger ships for more attention, but then you can lose your way. I write because I like to, and there are also fics I really love reading, so posting my own is a way to give back. I write what I want to read.
Do you primarily post on AO3 or do you also do FF.net?

Date: 2022-01-29 09:22 am (UTC)"you can lose your way" -- yeah, I can imagine myself getting too wrapped up in planning what would get me the most clicks & comments & kudos and forgetting what I actually want to write. I write fic so I don't have to think about audience and trends, it would be stupid to get swept up in it anyway.
Although I admit, picking the most niche ship or theme to be ~original~ also isn't very admirable and I know I do that. *sighs* oh well, I'm not a saint.
I only post on AO3. I'm AO3 generation (by joining fandom, not by age), and everything I've ever heard of ff.net just makes me more sure I never want to put my writing there. This thread on Fandom.ink, as an example.
