It's Star Wars Day tomorrow! Because of that, this chat corner's prompt is "traditions" - both in-universe and yours.

Do you like May the Fourth? Do you do something special on it, or are you planning to this year?

(Hmmm, I don't actually remember any other in-universe tradition past Empire Day and Life Day. Is that even still canon?)

Alright, you win. I thought there had to be some plasma balls and/or gas cloud aliens in SW, but if they are I can't remember any.

Interesting, though! "sentient gas cloud" is a pretty common trope in SF.

Hmm, I don’t know if there are any sentient gas clouds in a galaxy far far away, but who knows?? That galaxy is vast enough, anything is possible.

Ah, such a tricky question these days! Although I have always liked Star Wars I can say that I only really got fannish about it in the last two years. So I have never celebrated May the Fourth though I think it's fun that the fandom has a special day.

Speaking of being recent to the fandom, I hadn't known of that exchange before. It made me realize that I can't subscribe to a collection on AO3.

Speaking of Life Day I quite enjoyed the LEGO Life Day short that was released just before Christmas last year. Very fun with one particularly hilarious moment.

About canon: true, true. Besides, I don't think many fans really care, these days. :D I like that; mix-and-match canons are fun.

BTW, speaking of celebrations, I happened to come across an online news story that mentioned that this Las Vegas bar is reopening post-Covid restrictions. Apparently it's for all fandoms but we can tell from the title what the main one is: Millenium Fandom Bar https://www.fandombar.com/

I’m planning to watch the Bad Batch tomorrow to celebrate May the 4th.

On May 25, I’ll rewatch the original Star Wars film. Yeee!

Oh crap, I forgot that's an issue! :D It's gonna be whatever I get my mitts on, I guess - I have some old DVD rips from who knows when, but they look pretty horrifying on Full HD.

Nostalgically, I'd like the version we used to watch as kids... but it might be a bit of a treasure hunt to find which version it is. I actually still have the VHS tapes - just not the VHS machine anymore! 🤣️

I remember watching the 1997 and 2005 editions in my childhood. VHS and DVDs! I feel old lol

I haven’t seen the de-specialized ones yet but someday.. I’ll get around to that.

I really need to watch the de-specialized edition of ANH one of these days, because the added CGI completely ruined it for me (it might also be the bluray that was the problem, because for me the ultimate viewing experience of ANH will always be the word and well-loved VHS)

Hm, you actually might have a point about the (lack of) video quality! Maybe I should watch it in the old-ass DVD-rip avi.

I don't mind CGI in general, but for some reason, I can't stand CGI'd Yoda. He's supposed to look like a green muppet!

The Mandalorian did this really well with Grogu, I think. He's CGI, obviously, but he moves like a doll.

The CGI additions don't bother me in any of the other movies except in ANH, because they feel completely out of place in its low-budget indie aesthetic. Maybe if they were as good as the effects now on Mandalorian, it wouldn't bother me so much but as it is, the CGI just stands out like a sore thumb.

Me, I mostly like May the Fourth for the pun. :D It's cute!

Beside that, I like these not-really-important days to mark the calendar... it helps make the days a little less same-y. Medieval European peasants had a point with all those holy days 😎️

Last year I rewatched Episode I (baby's first Star Wars!) and I had fun, so maybe I'll make it a movie night this year too.

Update: I watched Episode III (for the first time, because I'm pathologically tragedy-averse).

1. There are more things that were later used in SW:CW than I expected! Pretty bittersweet, considering the ending.
2. To quote Cleolinda Jones' wonderful SW liveblogs, "there is too much movie in this movie".
3. ...yeah, this movie is sad and I hate it.
4. I'm still pissed that Prequels fridges two women for Anakin's manpain. That'll have to go to the Dark Side post though, I don't wanna stink up this comment section.
