Thinking it over, the MCU/Star Wars parallels do make me wonder which of these films (assuming they end up being produced) will or should get theatrical releases – my impression is that at least some of the MCU’s financial and critical difficulties stem from the fact that recent films require you to have watched multiple other films and TV series in order to understand what’s going on, and I suspect Filoni’s film in particular is going to be basically impossible to follow unless you’ve been keeping up with the David Filoni Cinematic Universe and taking diligent notes. I can see it being well-received as a direct-to-streaming TV movie marketed towards New Republic fans, but I’m hard-pressed to imagine it winning over people who aren’t already in Star Wars fandom.
I do think there might have been an opportunity a few years ago to do The Mandalorian: The Movie, but at this point I feel like (a) mainstream fandom for The Mandalorian has faded a bit, and (b) Filoni doesn’t want to do a film about one or two recognisable characters, he wants to do the cinematic equivalent of a comic-book crossover event.
