The Dark Side (permanent post)

Welcome to the Dark Side. This post’s comment section is dedicated to all the angry, inflammatory, defamatory and otherwise outright negative things you might want to express. Not that saying negative things isn’t allowed in the weekly chat corners, but… you know how you sometimes just Have Thoughts about something, and you don’t feel like you can talk about it because everyone around you seems to love it? Those go here.

Some rules:

  • No personal attacks.
  • If you don’t want people replying to you, mention it in the comment.
  • Follow the general comm rules.
  • …that’s it, I think.

I recommend watching The People vs. George Lucas, which is a documentary about a portion of the OT fans’ negative opinions on the prequels. Some of those opinions are tied heavily to nostalgia. Tho the prequels were different at the time, yet still a continuation of the story from the creator himself.

Now, the negative opinions on the sequels are different, since the creator wasn’t really involved in the sequels. I’m still shocked that Disney didn’t use his sequel treatments, nor planned out the sequels in the first place. Though the emotions remain the same, just amplified with social media.

Personally, I liked most of the ST characters in the TFA, but did not like the direction they were taken in with the other two movies. Heck, even one of them was replaced by another ‘tokenized’ character in the second movie, who was later sidelined in the third movie. Yikes. More importantly, they could have been written in a way that didn’t dimish or undermine the achievements of the original legacy characters.

Anyway, yes, sw fan fiction never ceases to entertain me. The fans create the ‘what if’s’. And we’ll always have the original six films and the EU. (Although, since I’m new to the EU, I’m mainly sticking to Zahn’s books. There was also drama over some authors writing Mara Jade terribly ooc that Timothy Zahn became very protective of her and his original sw characters, that he was hesitant to bring them into the current disney canon)

I’d still be curious with reading a draft of his ST treatments. At least they’re part of his original vision, even if I might not like all of it.

I see it as 50/50. I wouldn’t be too surprised if they didn’t bring Mara Jade, but I’d be very surprised if they did bring her in properly. As long as Zahn is consulted if she’s brought back.

This is sort of on topic, but there’s going to be a six part documentary series in the works about Lucas. Perhaps he could share more of his ideas about his own sequel treatments if he were to be involved.

I did see SWT cover the Star Wars archive books where Lucas mentioned some concepts for his sequels: Luke rebuilds the Jedi Order, while Leia re-establishes the New Republic. Darth Maul is the main villain while Darth Talon is the secondary villain (like Vader). I’d be interested in reading the treatments or drafts of the scripts. What a shame that the Mouse threw it away for their own hubris.
