I ended up liking this one by the end but as someone who really enjoyed the old Jedi Apprentice series it was hard to get into initially.

Whilst I'm glad we got to skip teenage Obi-Wan having to suffer slavery in a sea mine etc it was still awkward to see him and Qui-Gon not be close this far into their partnership.
(I get that there's still time for it before TPM happens but it was a bit jarring)
I'm told the prequel to this book "Padawan" (which I haven't read) unfortunately fails to provide any reason for Qui-Gon's reluctance to take on Obi-Wan for training and thus their awkward situation which as a Qui-Gon fan I find annoying. He gets enough bashing from the fandom for his behaviour towards Obi-Wan but to not even address why he's that way is just weird.

Overall the plot is decent with a few twists and a good ending. I also appreciated that it had flashbacks to Qui-Gon's days with Dooku and the revelation that Dooku was messing around with the Dark Side way earlier than I expected. There's also an attempt to discuss the Republic's lax stance on slavery which for myself has always been a big peeve so that was also good to see.
